Ethernet's Next Steps: 40-, 100-Gbit Speeds

The Ethernet Alliance has extended its roadmap via a compromise that will add 40-Gbit and 100-Gbit speeds, the organization has announced.

Users familiar with Gigabit Ethernet speeds may know that the technology originally began life in the server space, then migrated down to the desktop PC. Likewise, the IEEE 802.3 working group has decided upon a new 40-Gbit speed for server and storage applications and a 100-Gbit speed for network aggregation.
